Taunton Fabrications achieves certification to EN 1090-1 for CE marking of secondary metalwork at Execution Class 2
Taunton Fabrications Ltd, which is a leading manufacturer of structural frames, staircases, balustrades and balconies in mild and stainless steel. The company, which is based in the South-West, has been producing fabricated steel and architectural metalwork since 1992 and supplies many principle contractors in the construction industry.
The need for EN 1090-1 to be integrated with existing management systems
Taunton Fabrications already had a well-established management system that encompassed ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management & OHSAS 18001 occupational health & safety management, all of which have been certified by a UKAS accredited third party. The company needed to extend the scope of their management system to include EN 1090-1, the quality management system for structural metal work, to comply with the Construction Products Regulations that came into force on July 1st 2014 and to allow them to CE mark their products.
How Construction Certification helped
As a registered coach with the UK Government-sponsored Growth Accelerator programme, our Associate was able to arrange for the company to receive a 50% rebate on cost of training and coaching needed to embed EN 1090-1 & CE marking.
Our Associate put together a detailed audit programme to understand the ways in which the existing management systems met the requirements of EN 1090-1 and to identify any gaps that remained. This gap analysis was used to produce a fully-detailed action plan that included guidance on production controls, Qualified Weld Procedures and staff training. In collaboration with the company’s ISO management systems consultant, our Associate integrated the Construction Certification model for EN 1090-1 with the existing management systems, to produce a Factory Production Control system that was fully compliant with CE marking requirements. The Management Representative and Responsible Welding Coordinator were given training on the requirements of the new standard. A few months working with the Factory Production Control system gave Taunton Fabrications the chance to fine-tune how it worked and to build up a portfolio of projects for the certification stage. Construction Certification advised on a short list of Notified Bodies and supported the company through a successful certification visit.
Customer comment
“Although already certificated for ISO 9001, 14001 & OHSAS 18001 standards, it was decided that the company should become compliant with regard to CE marking regulations and specifically BS EN 1090-1. It soon became evident that we would need to update our design processes, introduce a Factory Production Control System, develop a more robust supply chain, introduce more welding procedures and have our own fully trained Responsible Welding Coordinator. To do this we needed someone with experience of BS EN 1090-1 and Richard Porter of Construction Certification was appointed to assist us in preparing and developing updated and new procedures. Over a period of four months Construction Certification provided us with the expertise, guidance and re-assurance that we required which resulted in an audit with no non-conformances and a recommendation that we obtain certification.”
